Conçus au départ comme des outils de gestion, les SIG ont progressivement évolué pour devenir des outils d’aide à la décision, de partage d’information, d’échange entre les différents acteurs qui font partie intégrante du territoire : puissance publique, citoyens, associations, tiers secteur, entreprises. Ce territoire évolue au rythme de l’Internet. Il est maintenant truffé de références territoriales, d’adresses et d’itinéraires et la cartographie est un maillon essentiel des systèmes d’information. Le territoire numérique doit compléter, enrichir, densifier le territoire physique. On évoque à ce propos, la notion de « territoire augmenté ».
